Suri alpacas are very rare, comprising between 5%
to 7% of the world' alpaca population.
Suris are a separate breed with a distinctly different coat that hangs on the body,
often in ringlets resembling dreadlocks.
A high quality suri coat is so
lustrous it glistens in the sunlight and feels like silk to the touch. Besides
the unique coat that hangs vertically there are no significant
physical differences between suri alpacas and the more common huacayas (characterized by their puffy coats that grow out from the body).

Bonny Doon has painstakingly put together a high quality herd of suris in
many different colors. The most common color in South America is white. Though we
collected colors other than white our main criteria in selection was to find
suris that were structurally outstanding with lustrous, fine coats with distinctive lock
formation.
Bonny Doon Alpacas has the most genetically and colorfully diverse suri
collection in California. We have suris from Peruvian, Chilean and Bolivian bloodlines.
Our suri
studs offer outcrossing to any West Coast breedings. Ziggy is
our beautiful white suri stud with a lustrous coat. He has excellent
conformation and temperament. He comes from Dafi Alpacas in
Maryland and is the offspring of two
registered Peruvian parents.
